EV Training Guide Empty EV Training Guide

Post by Cobthecobbler Wed Jul 07, 2010 3:46 am

Pokemon: EV Training Guide
Everything you need to know about EV Training!

First off, what are EV's?

EV's, or Effort Values/Points, are how the stats of your Pokemon are determined, or in other words, the Stats of your Pokemon are based on what Pokemon you battle. Each battle (foe) can grant your Pokemon 1-3 EV's, depending on what stage of evolution that Pokemon is in. A Basic Stage Pokemon will grant you 1 EV, a 1st Stage Evolution Pokemon will grant you 2 EVs, and a 2nd Stage Evolution Pokemon will grant you 3 EVs per battle.

As with anything, there are exceptions. Some Basic Stage Pokemon will give you 2, or even 3 if it has only one evolution, EVs per battle, most of the time it's because they have no other Evolutions. Now, for the confusing part. A Single Pokemon can give you any combination of EV's for different stats, so long as the sum of of those EV's equal 2 or 3. For Example, Battling a Muk will give you 1 EV in HP and 1 EV in Attack, whereas defeating Raikou will give you 2 EVs in Speed, and 1 EV in Special Attack.

Understanding your limits

One Pokemon may have a maximum of 510 EVs on them. These can be distributed however you want, you could give your Pokemon an "EV Spread" of 255 in one stat, and 255 in another, or 252 in one stat, 252 in another, and 6 in a third, or even 100 in 5 stats with the leftover 10 in the last stat. As long as it equals up to 510, it's good.

A Pokemon may be given a maximum of 255 EV's in one stat. Of Course, that means you'll only be allowed to max out 2 stats. Stay with me here, for every 4 EVs you gain in one stat, upon leveling up, the corresponding stat will raise +1. So, if you have 6 in one stat, that specific stat will only go up by +1, although having accumulated 8 EVs in that stat, it'll go up +2, 12 EVs will go up +3, 16 EVs will go up +4 and so on. If you've been granted a number of EVs not divisible by 4, then the Stat Increment (Stat Increase) is rounded down.
A useful tip: Since 252 is divisible by 4, it is recommended you only put in 252 Effort Points into one or two stats, so that the extra 6, after two stats have been maxed, can be put into a third stat, giving that stat that extra point.

Now, this all seems like it'll take forever to gain the desired EVs, right? Wrong again, my friend.

Let's speed things up

There are many items and factors that can speed up the process of EV Training by a lot.

PokeRus
  • PKRS PokeRus, or the Pokemon Virus - A Medical Condition acquired by battling, or catching a Pokemon in the Wild afflicted with the Pokemon Virus. This 'condition' doubles the amount of EV's gained after a battle is won.

This handy little virus promotes the gain of EVs after a Battle, it can be used in conjunction with the Macho Brace and the Power Items, which will be explained later. This is probably the most useful aid in EV Training you can have. For one, it's free, easy to give to your Pokemon, and it's spreadable to other Pokemon.

How to Spread PokeRus and other Useful Info
If you have a Pokemon with the EV Training Guide Pok%C3%A9rusIC Icon next to or underneath their name, when viewing the Pokemon's summary, then, Congratulations! You have a Pokemon ready to transfer PokeRus to another Pokemon. Spreading PokeRus is extremely easy, so long as the PokeRus infected Pokemon hasn't been cured.
First, let me explain the Stages of PokeRus.
  • Not Infected - This Pokemon has not yet been infected with PokeRus.
  • EV Training Guide Pok%C3%A9rusIC Infected - The Pokemon is infected with PokeRus, and will gain double the amount of EVs at the end of a battle, as well as infect other party member Pokemon with the virus.
  • EV Training Guide Dpp_evguide_pkrs_curedCured - This Pokemon has been cured of it's PokeRus status. Although this Pokemon cannot spread the virus, it will continue gaining the EV Bonus that PokeRus gives.

PokeRus is automatically cured if the Pokemon is left in your party for more than 24 hours, or if it's taken to a Pokemon Center to heal up. Upon healing in the Pokemon Center, Nurse Joy will tell you this:
Nurse Joy wrote:"Your Pokémon may be infected with Pokérus.
Little is known about the Pokérus except that they are microscopic lifeforms that attach to Pokémon.
While infected, Pokémon are said to grow exceptionally well."
Furthermore, if a Pokemon is left in the PC with PokeRus, PokeRus will not go away and the 24 hour timer will reset. Use this to your advantage, and always have a PokeRus Pokemon in your PC.

Now you're wondering how to actually spread PokeRus, right? Well, If the first Pokemon in your Party is infected, all you have to do is go into a battle (And you can even just run from the battle, no need to stick around and fight...) 4 times, for the Virus to spread to the next Pokemon in your party. From then on, I believe it's 2 battles for each Pokemon after that to get infected. So, here's my suggestion: Put the infected Pokemon in your first slot, and the Pokemon you want infected in the second slot. Go into battle 4 times, running from each one, and wa-la! You're secondary Pokemon is now infected with PokeRus, good job.

Vitamins
Let's start out with the easy, and more commonly known items, Vitamins. There are 9 Vitamins, 6 of which help with EV Training. The Vitamins are as follows;
  • EV Training Guide Bag_HP_Up_SpriteHP Up - Grants the HP Stat 10 free EVs
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Protein_SpriteProtein - Grants the Attack Stat 10 free EV's
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Iron_SpriteIron - Grants the Defense Stat 10 free EV's
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Calcium_SpriteCalcium - Grants the Special Attack Stat 10 free EVs
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Zinc_SpriteZinc - Grants the Special Defense Stat 10 free EV's
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Carbos_SpriteCarbos - Grants the Speed Stat 10 EVs
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Rare_Candy_SpriteRare Candies- These Seemingly Useless Items will grant you a free levelup, but to make them Useful, they actually take into account the EV's your Pokemon has when it calculates your new stats.

Each of these Vitamins can be given to a Pokemon 10 times, max. That means these Vitamins will give you a maximum of 100 EVs per stat. That also means that to max out a stat, after giving it ten of the appropriate Vitamin, you only need to EV Train the stat 155 more Points.

The Macho Brace
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Macho_Brace_SpriteMacho Brace - Doubles the amount of EV's Earned in Battle, but also lowers the holder's Speed during Battle.

A very useful item, this is. This item doubles the amount of EV's gained at the end of a battle, just like PokeRus. This item is your best friend when EV Training before gaining access to the Battle Frontier, where you can get better items for EV Training.
A useful tip: When Macho Brace and PokeRus are used together, the EVs are doubled, and then doubled again. So, if a Pokemon gives 1 EV per battle, it's first doubled to 2 EVs, and then doubled again to 4 EVs.

The Power Items
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Power_Weight_SpritePower Weight - Adds +4 to the amount of HP EV's Gained, but also lower the holder's Speed during Battle.
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Power_Bracer_SpritePower Bracer - Adds +4 to the amount of Attack EV's Gained, but also lower the holder's Speed during Battle.
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Power_Belt_SpritePower Belt - Adds +4 to the amount of Defense EV's Gained, but also lower the holder's Speed during Battle.
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Power_Lens_SpritePower Lens - Adds +4 to the amount of Special Attack EV's Gained, but also lower the holder's Speed during Battle.
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Power_Band_SpritePower Band - Adds +4 to the amount of Special Defense EV's Gained, but also lower the holder's Speed during Battle.
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Power_Anklet_SpritePower Anklet - Adds +4 to the amount of Speed EV's Gained, but also lower the holder's Speed during Battle.

Ah, these are the bread and butter of EV Training. These handy little doo-dads will add 4 EV's to the amount granted to you at the end of a battle. Stacked with PokeRus, these items make time fly while EV Training.
A useful tip: When battling a Pokemon that gives you 1 EV, so long as you have the appropriate Power Item held, after the battle, the holder will gain 5 EVs in that stat, and if the holder has PokeRus, that means you gain 10 EVs per battle! Wow! PokeRus always has second priority, so what you do is add the +4 EVs first, and then double it.

EV Training a Low-Leveled Pokemon

Basically, you have two options here. You can either stick Macho Brace/Power Item on said Pokemon and switch out to a higher leveled Pokemon at the start of a battle, or you could abuse the EXP Share.
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Exp._Share_Sprite EXP Share - When the holder is not in battle, it is given half of the Experience gained at the end of the battle and Half of the EV's earned.

If you just hatched your first Impish Skarmory and want to get training it right away, use one of these methods. I recommend putting on Macho Brace or the necessary Power Item and keep switching out, which will give them the full amount of EV's after a battle, but if you'd rather use the EXP Share and save your high-leveled Pokemon some HP, then by all means, do that. Just note that the EXP Share cuts the gained EV's in half.

Checking EV's

Now, there is no actual way to check a Pokemon's specific EV's, so keep a good record of them. What you can do though, is check out if the Pokemon has gathered all 510 EV's. This can be checked by being awarded the Effort Ribbon, for being such a hard worker. Here's where you can check to see if your Pokemon has reached the max cap of EV's:
  • R/S/E - Slateport Market Area
  • D/P/Pt - Sunnyshore Market (Where seal's can be bought)
  • HG/SS - Blackthorn City

EV Training 'Hot Spots'

R/S/E:
  • HP - Whismur - Cave on Route 106
  • Attack - Carvanha - Route 119 (Super Rod)

  • Special Defense - Tentacool - Almost Anywhere you can surf
  • Speed - Zubat/Golbat - Cave of Origin

  • HP - Shellos/Bidoof - Valley Windworks

  • Speed - Magikarp - Use Old Rod, or surf in Blackthorn City, Magikarp is the only Pokemon in those waters. Ratatta, Pidgey, Furret, Sentret - Route 1 (As suggested by TheGoldenFerret)

Getting Rid of Unwanted EV's

There are ways of getting rid of EV's and they don't come to much of a risk at all, being as they also increase your Pokemons friendship level. This is how they work. If a Pokemon's EV's are over 100, The corresponding Berry will bring it down to 100, and from then on, each berry will remove 10 EV's, a Total of 11 of one berry will bring them down to zero, so long as the EV's in that stat were over 100. Here are the Berry's:
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Pomeg_Berry_SpritePomeg Berry - Lowers HP EV's
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Kelpsy_Berry_SpriteKelpsy Berry - Lowers Attack EV's
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Qualot_Berry_SpriteQualot Berry - Lowers Defense EV's
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Hondew_Berry_SpriteHondew Berry - Lowers Special Attack EV's
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Grepa_Berry_SpriteGrepa Berry - Lowers Special Defense EV's
  • EV Training Guide Bag_Tamato_Berry_SpriteTamato Berry - Lowers Speed EV's

Well, apart from the oncoming legal junk, that's everything you need to know about EV Training. I hope this guide has taught you everything you wanted to know, as well as answered any questions you may have had. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

IV's you have no control over im afraid, they are random and are set in stone i believe. If anyone knows otherwise, let me know IV's are still something weird to me.

This is great - I'm just beginning to EV myself, this'll be quite helpful. Also, I've got a couple of formulas etc. that may be handy, as well as a fairly quick and easy method: The Counter Pokétch App (Number 11)

1. Turn to Pokétch App 11: Counter.
2. Add Vitamins to your Pokémon.
3. Set Counter App to 100.
4. Add Pokérus/Power Item to your Pokémon.
5. Find EVing hotspot.
6. Whenever you knock out a Pokémon, add the amount of EVs it gives (taking into account Power Items and Pokérus).
7. Repeat until the Counter App is at 252, removing the Power Item when necessary to make up the remainder.

Thoughts? Also, looking at your DPPt hotspots, I find that using a Super Rod on the small lake just south of Veilstone yields Seaking and Gyarados, which is great for anything wielding an Electric move. Very Happy

@Disalga, IV's aren't completely random. Think of it as a punnet square. As with hereditary traits in Human Beings, the IV's are similar to that of the parents, and there's a chance that some will pass down, but very unlikely. Now, if you hatch, catch or just have a Pokemon with 31 IV's in anything, take it to the Day Care, attach the Power Item that corresponds with the IV of 31 (31 IV's in Speed = Power Anklet), and breed. All the offspring will have that 31 in whatever stat had it (As long as you had the power item on)

@Ethan, soon my friend, I will update this monster :3

@FoP, I think Quail might have the most fun out of creating an IV Breeding guide, I'm waiting to get it to him :3
