Ferret's Guide To Team Synergy
Welcome, one and all, to Ferret's Guide to Team Synergy!
In this guide, I'll be telling you all what makes good team synergy in a competitive team. Team synergy in Pokemon is how well your team covers its members' weaknesses.
So, let's start with a Pokemon to base a team around. I'll say... Togekiss! It's an OU Pokemon, a great Special Sweeper, one of my favorite Pokemon, and this forum's mascot! So let's take a look at the Pokemon.
Typing: Normal/Flying
Abilities: Serene Grace/Hustle
Weaknesses: Rock [x2], Electric [x2], Ice [x2]
Resistances: Bug [1/2], Grass [1/2]
Immunities: Ground, Ghost
Okay, so, it's stats tell us that it's a bulky Special Sweeper, with an ability that increases it's chances of causing added effects. It's typing gives it a weakness to Stealth Rock, Stone Edge, and Ice Beam, but gives it an immunity to Earthquake.
Now, let's say we have this set:
Togekiss @ (Leftovers)
Ability: Serene Grace
Calm Nature
EVs: 252 HP/152 SpAtk/104 Spe
-Nasty Plot
-Roost
-Air Slash
-Aura Sphere
Now, Togekiss's main counters are Zapdos, Cresselia (which is rare), and Blissey.
Zapdos can come in on either Air Slash or Aura Sphere without taking much damage at all, and can cripple Togekiss with Thunder Wave and take it out with Thunderbolt.
Blissey can easily survive any of Togekiss's attacks, seeing as its got a 255 base HP and a 135 base Special Defense. It shrugs off Air Slashes and Aura Spheres with ease, and can Thunder Wave or Toxic Togekiss and wear it down over time.
So, what can counter Zapdos and Blissey? Well, how about this set:
Electivire @ (Life Orb)
Adamant Nature
EVs: 252 Atk/252 Spe/4 HP
-Cross Chop
-Ice Punch
-Thunderpunch
-Earthquake
It can easily come in on a Zapdos's Thunderbolt or Thunder Wave, and take it down with two Ice Punches from boosted speed. (Electivire's Ice Punch vs. 248 HP/228 Def is a guaranteed 2HKO)
Electivire can come in on Blissey's Thunder Waves or Toxics and be fine, and take it out with Cross Chop in a turn or two.
Now, can you see why these two Pokemon work well together? One of Togekiss's main weaknesses is Electric, that's absorbed by Electivire, making him faster, and therefore stronger. But, Togekiss still has those Rock and Ice type weaknesses. So, we need to find somethings to resist that, since we're focusing on sweeping with Togekiss.
So lets start on those Ice and Rock weaknesses. Well, Togekiss's Aura Sphere can easily take down most Ice/Rock Pokemon and OHKO them. But, Tyranitar presents a problem, because it has the ability Sand Stream. When a Rock-type Pokemon is in battle while sandstorm is in play, it's Special Defense is boosted by 50%. So, that basically gives Tyranitar a base 150 Special Defense. So we need something that can take out the Dark-Rock type Tyranitar, and the best counter for Tyranitar, in my opinion, is the ever popular Scizor.
Scizor @ (Life Orb)
Ability: Technician
Adamant Nature
EVs: 252 Atk/252 Spe/4 HP
-Swords Dance
-Bug Bite
-Bullet Punch
-Brick Break
Okay, this thing is just a total beast. You can use Bug Bite to take out Tyranitar, and then Bullet Punch can quickly take out anything that doesn't resist it.
Of course, every Pokemon has a counter, and the Pokemon that counters that Pokemon's counter has a counter too, if that's not too confusing.
Basically, all you have to do is cover up every Pokemon's weakness with a Pokemon that... well, covers it. So, the basic method of thinking is to check the Pokemon's weakness, and see what can stop it. So, if the Pokemon's a physical sweeper, get something that can stop Skarmory, or Cresselia, or any other physical walls.
I'll be making changes to this in the near future, going more in-depth for those who need it.

Re: Ferret's Guide To Team Synergy
Great, but you forgot to mention the Rotom formes when mentioning Togekiss's counters, in particular Rotom-A. Electivire can't really do anything about this apart from coming in on T-Bolt and Ice Punching, but Rotom's bulky and Shadow Ball screws it over, and it'll just lol at Scizor and T-Bolt or Air Slash it.

I knew I had forgotten something! Thanks for making me aware of this, and I'll edit it in soon... As soon as I get back from vacation...
